A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to be part of a unique type of art show. In this art show, poets, photographers, and painters combine their talents and showcase them in a gallery.
In short, poets write poetry, and painters/photographers choose which poem they would like to interpret in their respective art form. This is my second year participating in the show, and I chose to depict a poem called “Sky” by Bradley Trull.
“Sky”
The sun and moon
were twins once
same size, same light
rising together
lighting up the day
leaving night pitch blackuntil one day
they fell out of love
and the moon
took to the night
and there she wept
her tears fell and
became stars
leaving her small and dim
only a reflection
of what she was.-Bradley Trull-
To be honest, the photograph I envisioned when I first read this poem was much more complex than the final result. I imagined flowy dresses, my ginger friend modeling as the sun, enormous mirrors, and levitation edits, but I ended up taking a photo alone, in my basement, with my tripod and camera remote. Nevertheless, I am quite proud of the result (and it won Best Photograph, so I’d say it’s not too shabby).
If you’re ever stuck in a creative rut with your photography (or other type of artistry), I encourage you to attempt interpreting a poem through art. It’s kind of incredible how inspiring an eloquent collection of letters can be.
Elyssa, I am so proud of you! This is amazing! You are gifted of the Lord. Keep using it for Him!
