Something I haven’t mentioned yet in a post: I was able to upgrade my digital camera this year! I have been shooting with a Canon t3i since high school and it just wasn’t cutting it as I started doing fast-paced weddings and wanted to shoot more video. This is one of the first photos I took with my EOS R back in May! Now I have two weddings under my belt with this camera and I’m stoked about the results. I’m also excited to get back into digital creative projects now that I feel confident in my equipment again. Film will always be my go-to, but it feels great to be inspired in a different way!

When I’m ready to part ways with my t3i, I’m going to look into donating it and its accessories to the @blkarchivist project! The Black Archivist project is a super neat initiative started by @pauloctavious to put more cameras into the hands of Black photographers. Visit @blkarchivist to learn more, apply for a camera, donate equipment, or donate to their Venmo! 📸

I did a little “how are you feeling” check-in

I did a little “how are you feeling” check-in on my other account and an overwhelming amount of responses referenced fatigue, sadness, worry, anger, and overall emotional overwhelm. Everything going on right now—politically, environmentally, civically—would be overwhelming and exhausting any year, let alone in the middle of a pandemic. With the Breonna Taylor case ruling yesterday just reconfirming that this country does not care about Black lives (Black women’s lives specifically in this case), it’s more evident than ever that the justice system was created to work this way and it needs to be dismantled. We need to show up now, not just November 3rd and beyond. Find out what you can do locally to make change in your communities. Put aside time for rest when you can because our bodies are clearly begging for it. Also please think about donating to a bail fund today if you haven’t already.

If you don’t live on the west coast and/or haven’t heard yet, Oregon is on fire (and Washington & California too). As of a few minutes ago when I checked the fire map, there are 37 active fires across the state of Oregon, burning 805,000+ acres collectively—and five of them are currently burning more than 100,000 acres each: Beachie Creek/Santiam (185,235 acres); Holiday Farm (144,695 acres); Lionshead (125,543 acres, has connected with Santiam Fire); Riverside (120,857 acres); and Archie Creek (107,577 acres). EACH OF THE ABOVE FIRES ARE 0-5% CONTAINED. Tens of thousands of people (around 40,000 according to the Oregonian today) have already been evacuated and displaced from Clackamas, Marion, Linn, and Lane counties and the fires are still growing. And that’s not even including the separate fires that evacuated Lincoln City on the coast and parts of Medford in southern Oregon. The air is extremely hazardous to breathe, the world has been varying shades of red, orange, and yellow (these pictures from 9/8 are unedited from my Canon), casualties have been confirmed, and the fire crews literally don’t have enough supplies to fight these fires. The devastation is already beyond comprehension and we’re still in the thick of it. Riverside and Santiam fires are expected to combine. While I was typing this I got a notification that Canby and Oregon City are now Evacuation Level 2 “Get Set” and Molalla is Level 3 “Go Now” and I can’t stop thinking about the friends I have in that area who are likely packing their cars right now. If you are in one of the areas where evacuees are staying, please check United Way’s current donation needs list or donate money if you can, see if a staging site near you needs volunteers, or find the local businesses/organizations in your area who are putting together meals (@kings.kitchen.86, @forkfortyfoodhall, @rafnslocalfoods, @taprootloungeandcafe, @uncletroysbbq are a few Salem places off the top of my head). Non-Oregon people, I’ll try to find more specific ways you can help. Be safe everyone.
